ExpressVPN has released a new app interface. If your app interface does not match what is shown below, update your ExpressVPN app.

This guide will show you how to update your ExpressVPN router firmware. To reset your ExpressVPN router to its original firmware, follow this guide.

Starting from ExpressVPN 2.7.0 for routers, updates will automatically install at 4 a.m. local time, if an update is available.

Find your ExpressVPN router’s firmware version

To find your ExpressVPN router’s firmware version:

  1. Go to the ExpressVPN router dashboard.
  2. Sign in with your router admin password.
  3. Select Advanced Settings > Software Update.
  4. You can see your firmware version next to ExpressVPN version.

Auto-update for ExpressVPN router app 2.7.0 or later

The auto-update feature, enabled by default on router app 2.7.0 or later, allows any available updates to install automatically on your router at 4 a.m. every day.

Turn off auto-update

If you do not want your router to automatically update, you can turn it off:

  1. Go to the ExpressVPN router dashboard.
  2. Sign in with your router admin password.
  3. Select Advanced Settings > Software Update.
  4. Toggle Install available updates daily at 4:00 a.m. off.
  5. Select Save.

When auto-update is turned off, you will be notified when a new update is available on the ExpressVPN router dashboard. To install the update, select Update Now.

Change your time zone settings

With the auto-update feature, your router will install any available updates automatically at 4 a.m. based on your router’s time zone. To ensure the update happens at the right time, make sure your router’s time zone is accurate. To check or change your time zone settings:

  1. Go to the ExpressVPN router dashboard.
  2. Sign in with your router admin password.
  3. Select Advanced Settings > Router Settings.
  4. Check your time zone under Time zone.
  5. To reset your time zone, select your time zone, then select Save.

Select "Save."

Manually update the firmware on ExpressVPN router v2

To update your ExpressVPN router, you will need to download the latest firmware version:

  1. Go to the ExpressVPN setup page.
  2. Enter your ExpressVPN credentials, then select Sign In.
  3. Select your router model.
  4. Select Download Firmware.

Go to the ExpressVPN router dashboard. Sign in with your router admin password.

In the sidebar, select Advanced Settings > Software Update.

Select “Software Update.”

Select Choose File.

Select "Choose file."

Select the firmware file, then select Update Now.

Select "Update Now."

During the firmware upgrade process, your device will be disconnected from the router’s Wi-Fi. Select your router’s Wi-Fi network to reconnect to the router again.

After the firmware has been upgraded, sign in to the ExpressVPN router dashboard again.

Manually update the firmware on ExpressVPN router v1

Note: It is recommended that you connect to the internet via an ethernet cable for a more stable connection.

To update your ExpressVPN router, you will need to download the latest firmware version:

  1. Go to the ExpressVPN setup page.
  2. Enter your ExpressVPN credentials, then select Sign In.
  3. Select your router model.
  4. Select Download Firmware.

Go to the ExpressVPN router dashboard. Sign in with your router admin password.

In the top navigation bar, select System. In the left-side menu, select Backup / Flash Firmware.

Select Choose File and select the firmware file. Select Flash Image…

Select whether you want to reset to default settings after upgrading. When asked whether you want to flash the firmware, Select Proceed.

While the firmware is being upgraded, select your preference when asked whether to keep your current configurations.

During the firmware upgrade process, your device will be disconnected from the router’s Wi-Fi. Select your router’s Wi-Fi to reconnect to the router again.

After the firmware has been upgraded, sign in with your router username and password.

I cannot upgrade my ExpressVPN router firmware

If you encounter an “invalid file” error when trying to update your ExpressVPN router firmware, follow these steps instead to update your firmware:

  1. Sign in to expressvpnrouter.com:8080.
  2. Select Administration.
  3. Sign in with your router admin username and password.
  4. Select Firmware Upgrade.
  5. Select Choose file, then select the ExpressVPN firmware you downloaded.
  6. Select Upgrade.
